Aphrodes bicinctus is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a widely distributed insect across Europe and parts of Asia, known for its ability to inhabit various habitats, including grasslands, cereal crops, and horticultural plantations, where it acts as a significant herbivore.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including cereal crops like wheat and barley, various forage grasses, and horticultural plants such as strawberries. Beyond the direct damage caused by phloem sap feeding, it is scientifically recognized as a vector for various plant pathogens, particularly phytoplasmas, which are responsible for yellows-type diseases in many agricultural crops.

The life cycle of Aphrodes bicinctus involves distinct developmental stages: egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, deposited within plant tissues. In the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately, undergoing a series of molts before reaching maturity, with the speed of development highly dependent on ambient temperatures.

Feeding damage is characterized by chlorosis (yellowing of foliage), stunting of the host plant, and leaf curling. The extraction of essential nutrients and the injection of toxic salivary enzymes cause severe physiological stress to the plants.
