Aphytis yanonensis

Aphytis yanonensis is a parasitic wasp belonging to the family Aphelinidae within the order Hymenoptera. It is recognized primarily as a highly effective biological control agent against the arrowhead scale (Unaspis yanonensis), a significant pest affecting citrus trees worldwide.

The host plants primarily damaged by the arrowhead scale include various citrus species such as lemons, satsuma mandarins, and oranges. The scale insect sucks sap from the leaves, twigs, and fruit, leading to yellowing of foliage, stunted tree growth, and significantly reduced yield and quality of the harvest.

The biology of this parasitoid is centered on its host-seeking behavior. Adult females locate the scale insect and oviposit directly beneath the protective scale covering. The developing larva consumes the body of the host. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, occurring entirely within the scale insect’s protective test.

The damage caused by the host scale is severe, often resulting in tree dieback if left uncontrolled. The presence of Aphytis yanonensis helps keep these populations in check. Evidence of its activity is usually observed as empty, punctured scale husks on the surface of the bark, indicating successful parasitism and subsequent mortality of the pest.
