Mallow weevil

Systematic position. The mallow weevil (Apion filirostre) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Apionidae. It is a small snout beetle widely recognized as a specific pest of various plants within the Malvaceae family, often impacting both ornamental gardens and medicinal plant plantations.

Crops and damage. The primary hosts for this weevil include mallow (Malva species) and marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis). Adult beetles cause damage by feeding on leaves, creating small, irregular holes. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larvae, which develop inside the seed pods, feeding on and destroying the developing seeds.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters as an adult in the topsoil or under leaf litter. When spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to feed on young foliage. Females lay eggs directly into the developing ovaries of the flowers. The larvae feed within the ripening seeds, where they eventually pupate, completing their development cycle within the host plant tissue.

Economic impact. The mallow weevil is considered a significant pest in seed production, as it directly impacts the yield and quality of seeds. High infestation levels can lead to a substantial loss of viable seeds, making the crop economically unfeasible for seed-gathering purposes. The hidden nature of larval development makes early detection and control difficult.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Apion filirostre:

• Removal of wild host plants like common mallow to reduce the pest reservoir.
• Deep autumn plowing to disturb and kill the overwintering adults in the soil.
• Application of suitable insecticides during the adult emergence phase, targeting the beetles before they lay eggs.
• Regular field monitoring to determine the timing of insecticide applications.
