Genista seed weevil

Systematic position. The Genista seed weevil (Apion flavifemoratum) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Apionidae. These small weevils are specialized pests that primarily target the reproductive structures of plants, specifically legumes, making them a significant concern for both agricultural and wild populations.

Host plants and damage. The pest attacks various legume species, particularly those in the genus Genista, and several cultivated pulses. The economic damage is caused by the larvae, which develop inside the pods and consume the developing seeds. This direct destruction significantly reduces yields and compromises the viability of seeds intended for future sowing.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the weevil is synchronized with the development of its host plants. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or topsoil and emerge in the spring. Once temperatures are favorable, females oviposit directly into young pods. The larvae emerge inside the pod, feed on the seeds, and eventually pupate within the host tissue before emerging as adults to repeat the cycle.

Nature of injury. Larval feeding often goes unnoticed until harvest, as the external pod may remain intact. However, once shelled, the seeds reveal internal damage—typically hollowed-out cavities filled with frass. Such seeds have drastically reduced germination rates and are often subject to secondary fungal infections that further degrade seed quality.

Protection measures. Effective control of the Genista seed weevil requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance while maximizing crop safety. Key strategies include:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Destroying weeds and alternate host plants in and around the fields.
• Executing deep autumn plowing to bury overwintering adults and larvae.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak of the flowering period to target adult weevils before they lay eggs.
