Description

The sorrel weevil (Apion frumentarium), belonging to the family Brentidae, is a distinct pest primarily identified by its vivid red color. This small beetle is well-adapted to environments where sorrel and related species grow, making it a significant challenge for growers of leafy greens.

The primary hosts of this pest are plants belonging to the Rumex genus, particularly common garden sorrel and rhubarb. The insects target these plants throughout their growth cycle, causing both aesthetic and physiological damage to the crop.

The life cycle involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on leaves and stems. Females deposit eggs into the leaf stalks, where the hatching larvae feed internally. This development phase is usually completed within a few weeks before pupation occurs.
