Sweetclover seed weevil

The sweetclover seed weevil (Apion meliloti) is a significant pest belonging to the Apionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This small beetle is specifically adapted to feed and reproduce on various species of sweetclover (Melilotus). Adults are typically characterized by their small size and distinctively elongated snout, which they use to feed on plant tissues.

This pest primarily affects sweetclover crops grown for seed production. While adults cause minor damage by feeding on foliage and buds, the larval stage is the most destructive. Larvae penetrate the developing pods of the plant, feeding exclusively on the seeds, which significantly reduces the yield and germinative capacity of the harvested crop.

The biology of Apion meliloti is synchronized with the phenological development of its host plant. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or the topsoil, emerging in the spring as temperatures rise. After a period of supplementary feeding, mating occurs, and females lay eggs within the developing seed pods. The larvae undergo their entire development within the pod, consuming the seed contents before pupating.

Damage caused by this weevil results in the loss of seed viability and pod deformation. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to a substantial loss of the harvest, impacting both the economic value and the propagation potential of the sweetclover crop. Identifying the presence of the pest early in the season is critical for preventing widespread damage.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling the sweetclover seed weevil include:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
• Maintaining field hygiene by eliminating wild sweetclover near cultivated areas.
• Monitoring adult populations using sweep nets during the pre-flowering and flowering stages.
