Knot-stem weevil

The knot-stem weevil (Latin: Apion reflexum) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Apionidae family. This beetle is a specialized pest that primarily affects leguminous crops, particularly clover. Its morphology is typical of the family, characterized by a small, pear-shaped body and a pronounced rostrum, which the female uses to drill into plant tissues for oviposition.

This pest is a significant threat to various species of perennial legumes grown for forage or seed production. Because Apion reflexum is highly host-specific, it thrives in fields where leguminous crops are cultivated continuously. The presence of the pest can often be detected by monitoring the condition of the stems during the active spring growth period.

The biological cycle of the knot-stem weevil is synchronized with the development of its host plants. Adults overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in spring to feed on young stems. The female lays eggs inside the stem, usually near the nodes. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the internal tissues of the stem, consuming the pith and causing structural damage to the plant.

The damage caused by Apion reflexum is distinctive: it leads to the formation of galls or swellings at the stem nodes, hence the common name. These injuries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, causing stems to weaken, twist, or break. High infestations result in reduced biomass yield and severe losses in seed quality and quantity, particularly in clover fields.

Management of the knot-stem weevil requires an integrated approach to minimize crop losses:

• Implementing strict crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
• Establishing spatial isolation between new clover fields and older, infested stands.
• Timely harvesting to remove plant material before larvae complete their development.
• Monitoring threshold levels and applying targeted insecticides only when necessary.
