The clover stem weevil (Apion seniculus) is a member of the Apionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It acts as a significant pest specifically targeting various species of clover and other forage legumes. The pest is widely distributed across regions where perennial legumes are cultivated, posing a threat to both hay production and seed yield.
The life cycle of Apion seniculus involves one generation per year, with adult weevils overwintering in the soil surface or beneath plant debris. As temperatures rise in early spring, adults become active and begin feeding on leaves. The damage caused by adults is characterized by small, round holes in the foliage, which is often the first visual indicator of a population presence in the field.
Females lay eggs into the stems or petioles, where the larvae develop internally. Feeding on the inner tissues of the stem is the most critical stage of damage.
