Broad-toothed field mouse
Apodemus mystacinus
Description
Systematic position. The Broad-toothed field mouse (Apodemus mystacinus) is a member of the Rodentia order and Muridae family. Known for its distinct physical features, such as long whiskers and robust body structure, this species is identified as an agricultural pest in specific geographical regions, primarily thriving in rocky habitats near cultivated fields.
Affected crops. This rodent is highly polyphagous. It frequently causes damage to various cereal crops, including wheat and barley, by consuming seeds in the soil. Furthermore, it poses a significant threat to orchards and vineyards, where it feeds on fruit and causes severe damage to tree bark, which can compromise the structural integrity and health of fruit-bearing trees.
Biology and development. The species is characterized by its nocturnal behavior and ability to build nests in rocky crevices. Their breeding season is extended, with females capable of producing multiple litters annually under favorable conditions. This rapid reproductive cycle allows populations to recover quickly, making them a consistent challenge for local agricultural management.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary economic loss is attributed to the destruction of sown seeds and the gnawing of young tree trunks. This physical damage often leads to the death of young seedlings and makes mature trees more susceptible to fungal infections and pests. Additionally, these rodents can infiltrate warehouses and granaries, contaminating stored food products with their waste.
Protection measures. Effective control involves a combination of preventative and corrective strategies. Farm management practices such as deep ploughing and maintaining clear edges around fields help destroy nesting sites. Protecting orchards with physical barriers around trunks is recommended. If population densities exceed thresholds, the use of chemical rodenticides is appropriate, provided that they are applied in accordance with environmental and safety guidelines.
