Jekel's leaf-rolling weevil
Apoderus jekelii
Description
Taxonomic position: Jekel's leaf-rolling weevil (Apoderus jekelii) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Attelabidae. These insects are widely recognized for their specialized behavior of cutting and rolling leaves into protective structures, which provide both food and shelter for their larvae throughout the early stages of development.
Host plants: The pest primarily targets various deciduous trees and shrubs. Common hosts include species within the Betulaceae and Juglandaceae families. In horticultural environments, these weevils may also infest fruit-bearing trees, causing aesthetic and physiological damage by rolling the young, succulent foliage.
Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is strictly dependent on the host plant's phenology. Adults emerge in spring to feed and reproduce. The female uses its rostrum to make precise incisions in the leaf, subsequently rolling it into a tight, cone-shaped container. Eggs are deposited inside these structures, where the larvae hatch and feed on the decomposing leaf tissue until they complete their development.
Damage and harmfulness: The most significant symptom of infestation is the presence of distinctive leaf-rolls hanging from branches. These leaves eventually wither, turn brown, and die. High populations of Apoderus jekelii can cause significant defoliation, which severely limits the plant's ability to photosynthesize, ultimately stunting growth and reducing the overall health of the tree.
Control measures include:
- Manual removal and destruction of rolled leaves as soon as they appear to disrupt the life cycle.
- Application of targeted insecticides during the adult emergence phase in early spring.
- Proper disposal of leaf litter in late autumn to eliminate overwintering sites for the weevils.
- Monitoring plant health and maintaining tree vigor to help them withstand minor infestations.
