Description
Apolygus spinolae (the Spinola mirid bug) is a significant pest belonging to the family Miridae within the order Hemiptera. It is frequently encountered in orchards and nurseries, where it poses a persistent threat to the health and vitality of various fruit-bearing plant species.
The host range of this insect is quite extensive, including key crops such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees, as well as various berry bushes. By feeding on the plant sap, the bug injects saliva that can cause localized necrosis and overall stress, impacting the plant's ability to produce healthy fruits.
Regarding its biology, the species typically overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the bark of young twigs or leaf petioles. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs undergo several instars, feeding voraciously and causing damage as they grow, before eventually molting into mobile adults capable of spreading throughout the orchard.
Damage symptoms are often characterized by malformed young leaves, stunted growth, and visible necrotic spotting. When nymphs feed on developing fruits, the result is often severe deformation, commonly referred to as "cat-facing," which significantly degrades fruit quality and renders the harvest unsuitable for commercial sale.
Management strategies focus on the timely application of systemic insecticides during the peak of nymph activity and the use of pheromone-based monitoring systems. Effective control also relies on cultural practices, including the removal of weeds that host the pest during early stages, as well as maintaining tree vigor through proper pruning and balanced nutrition.
