Black-veined white

Aporia crataegi

Description

The Black-veined white (Aporia crataegi) is a butterfly belonging to the Pieridae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known agricultural pest that affects various fruit-bearing trees. While the adult butterfly is common in temperate climates, its larvae are recognized for their gregarious feeding habits and potential to cause widespread defoliation in orchards.

This species primarily feeds on plants from the Rosaceae family. The most frequently attacked crops include apple, pear, plum, cherry, apricot, and hawthorn. By consuming foliage and buds, the caterpillars directly compete with the plant's development, leading to significant yield losses and stunted growth of the affected fruit trees if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of the Black-veined white consists of a single generation per year. The larvae overwinter in communal silken nests, which are tightly attached to branches and made from dried leaves. When spring arrives and temperatures rise, they emerge to feed aggressively. After pupation in late spring, the adult butterflies emerge in early summer, mate, and deposit their eggs on the surface of host leaves.

Damage caused by Aporia crataegi is most severe during the early spring and early summer. Young larvae skeletonize the leaves, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the midribs. This process reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees, stresses the plant, and can lead to a drastic reduction in harvest volume, making early intervention critical for orchard management.

Recommended strategies for controlling the Black-veined white:

  • Manual removal and incineration of winter nests during the dormant season.
  • Monitoring trees for egg clusters to prevent larval outbreaks.
  • Encouraging the presence of natural predators and parasitoids.
  • Applying selective insecticides during the early larval stage if necessary.
  • Maintaining proper orchard hygiene to reduce potential overwintering sites.
