Tadpole shrimp (genus Apus, often classified as Triops) belong to the order Notostraca. These prehistoric crustaceans are found in various freshwater environments. In agricultural practice, they are recognized as significant pests in direct-seeded rice fields, where they can severely impact crop establishment.

The primary crops affected by tadpole shrimp are young rice seedlings. During the early flooding stage of paddy fields, these pests actively consume organic material. Young rice plants that have not yet established a strong root system are particularly vulnerable to being uprooted or severed by the shrimp.

The biological cycle of the tadpole shrimp is highly adapted to ephemeral water bodies. Their eggs are capable of surviving in dry soil for years. Once the fields are flooded and temperatures rise, the eggs hatch rapidly. The population density can increase significantly within just a few days, leading to localized but intense damage to the crops.

The nature of damage includes the destruction of roots and shoots of rice seedlings. Furthermore, the feeding behavior of these crustaceans leads to increased turbidity of the water. This siltation blocks light penetration, which inhibits the photosynthetic activity of the submerged young plants, significantly slowing down their development and reducing the final stand density.

Management strategies for controlling tadpole shrimp involve a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Cultural practices include draining the fields for a short period to disrupt the life cycle of the larvae. Chemical control involves the application of specialized insecticides registered for use in rice production. Early monitoring and integrated pest management are crucial to minimizing economic losses.
