Araeolaimus is a genus of nematodes belonging to the order Araeolaimida and the family Araeolaimidae. These microscopic worms are primarily found in soil and aquatic environments, though several species have developed parasitic relationships with various agricultural plants, significantly affecting their development.
The pest primarily targets the root systems of vegetables, cereals, and ornamental plants. By penetrating the roots, these nematodes disrupt nutrient and water uptake, which often leads to the stunted growth of the plant and increased susceptibility to secondary soil-borne diseases such as fungi and bacteria.
The life cycle of Araeolaimus is strictly dependent on soil moisture and ambient temperature. The nematode goes through several larval stages, which require a moist environment to move through soil particles to locate a host root. Under favorable conditions, the population can increase rapidly, posing a persistent threat to crop health.
