Grape leafhopper

Arboridia adanae is a species of leafhopper belonging to the family Cicadellidae, commonly recognized as a significant pest in viticulture. These small, agile insects are primarily known for their destructive impact on grapevines by sap-feeding on the foliage, which can drastically reduce vine vigor and yield quality.

The primary host for this pest is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). While adults move quickly when disturbed, both nymphs and adults spend the majority of their life cycle on the underside of leaves. They rely exclusively on plant sap, and in high population densities, they can weaken even mature, healthy vines.

The life cycle of Arboridia adanae consists of several generations per year, depending on the climate. They overwinter as adults in protected environments, such as leaf litter, debris, or under the bark of the vine trunk. As temperatures rise in the spring, they migrate to the emerging shoots and leaves to begin their feeding and reproductive cycle.

The damage caused by these insects is identified by characteristic stippling on the leaves, where the chlorophyll has been depleted. As the infestation progresses, these white or yellow spots coalesce, leading to leaf bronzing or premature senescence. This reduction in the leaf surface area inhibits photosynthesis, often resulting in lower sugar accumulation in berries and weakened wood maturity for the following season.

Managing this pest requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Cultural control involves removing overwintering sites like debris and weeds in and around the vineyard. When threshold levels are exceeded, the application of registered insecticides targeting the nymph stages provides the best results for maintaining a healthy and productive crop.
