Description

The Short-winged grasshopper (Arcyptera microptera) belongs to the order Orthoptera, family Acrididae. This species is a recognized agricultural pest commonly found in grassland ecosystems and steppe regions, where its populations can escalate rapidly during favorable weather conditions.

The primary hosts of this pest are various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and maize. In addition to cultivated grains, it feeds on a wide range of wild grasses, which serves as a reservoir for populations when crops are not available or during the fallow period of agricultural fields.

Its biological cycle consists of a single generation per year. The species overwinters in the egg stage, with clutches deposited in the topsoil. Larval development occurs in the spring, passing through five instars before reaching the adult stage. The speed of this development is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and humidity.

Damage is characterized by the defoliation of leaves, which directly inhibits the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When infestation levels are high, grasshoppers can consume significant portions of the crop canopy, leading to weakened plants, stunted growth, and a reduction in both grain quality and total yield volume.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Tillage practices, such as autumn plowing and disk harrowing, are effective in exposing and destroying eggs in the soil. When monitoring indicates that populations exceed economic thresholds, insecticide applications targeting early larval stages are recommended to prevent extensive damage.
