The genus Ardea belongs to the family Ardeidae, within the order Pelecaniformes. While these birds are often viewed as part of the natural ecosystem, in the context of aquaculture and commercial fish farming, they are considered significant biological pests that can cause substantial economic losses for fish producers.

Herons are specialized aquatic predators with a highly developed ability to hunt in shallow waters. Their life cycle and foraging behavior are strictly tied to water bodies. In commercial environments, such as hatcheries or intensive pond systems, herons find an abundant and easily accessible food source, which leads to localized concentrations of the birds.

The damage caused by herons is primarily focused on the consumption of fish biomass. A single individual can consume large quantities of juvenile fish daily, which directly reduces the yield of a fish farm. Furthermore, the birds often cause physical injuries to larger fish, leading to stress and susceptibility to opportunistic bacterial or fungal infections.

In addition to direct predation, herons act as vectors for various parasitic diseases. By shedding parasite eggs into the water, they facilitate the transmission of trematodes and other helminths to the fish population. This epidemiological risk makes herons a critical concern for biosecurity in large-scale aquaculture operations.
