The lugworm (Arenicola marina) is a polychaete worm belonging to the family Arenicolidae. While primarily a marine inhabitant, it poses a specific challenge in agricultural contexts where raw marine sand or silt is extracted for use as a component in soil mixtures or horticultural landscaping projects.
The biology of the lugworm is centered around its burrowing behavior. It constructs U-shaped tubes that reach significant depths. By constantly passing sediment through its gut, the worm alters the physical characteristics of the substrate. The life cycle involves larval dispersal, which allows the species to settle rapidly in nutrient-rich environments.
In terms of agricultural impact, the lugworm acts as an agent of structural instability. When introduced into greenhouse containers or seedbeds, the burrowing activity disrupts root hairs and creates air pockets that lead to rapid desiccation. This physical disturbance often prevents delicate plant roots from establishing properly in the soil medium.
Damage caused by this organism is exacerbated by high salt concentrations inherently associated with its marine habitat.
