Smooth garden slug

Systematic position: The smooth garden slug (Arion circumscriptus) belongs to the order Stylommatophora and the family Arionidae. It is a terrestrial gastropod mollusk characterized by a distinct appearance, often identified by the dark lateral bands along its mantle and body, and it is widely distributed across temperate regions.

Biology and life cycle: Like many other slugs, Arion circumscriptus is a hermaphrodite with high reproductive potential. It prefers humid environments and relies on moisture to remain active, as it is highly susceptible to desiccation. The life cycle involves laying clusters of eggs in moist soil or organic debris, with the young slugs emerging to forage almost immediately after hatching.

Host plants: This species is a generalist feeder (polyphagous) and poses a serious threat to a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. Typical targets include leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage, strawberries, potatoes, and various flower seedlings, as well as the young, succulent shoots of essential garden plants.

Nature of damage and economic importance: Slugs cause significant damage by rasping away plant tissue with their radula. This results in irregular holes in leaves, often leaving only the main veins. Furthermore, they frequently feed on ripening fruit and tubers, rendering the produce unmarketable due to the presence of mucus, fecal pellets, and the introduction of opportunistic pathogens that cause rot.

Control measures: Effective management of the smooth garden slug requires a multi-layered IPM approach:

• Sanitation: clearing weeds and debris that serve as daytime hiding spots.
• Physical barriers: utilizing copper tape or rough textures like eggshells or wood ash to deter movement.
• Trapping: placing beer traps or damp cardboard sheets to collect and remove slugs manually.
• Chemical control: applying molluscicides, preferably those based on iron phosphate, which are safe for non-target species.
• Encouraging natural predators such as carabid beetles, frogs, and hedgehogs.
