Taxonomically, the species is part of the order Pleuronectiformes. Its biological development involves a pelagic larval stage during which the organism is carried by water currents into irrigation intakes. This makes the species a concern for farmers who draw water directly from marine or brackish environments, as the fish can invade the internal piping infrastructure.

The damage caused by this organism is primarily physical and mechanical. By entering irrigation networks, the fish and their larvae accumulate in pumps, valves, and emitters. This bio-fouling leads to blockages that impair water distribution uniformity, ultimately causing water stress in crops and potential yield loss due to inconsistent hydration or nutrient supply.

To protect agricultural infrastructure, the focus must be on robust physical filtration strategies. Implementing multi-stage filtration systems at the water intake is essential. These systems should be designed to prevent the ingress of juvenile fish, ensuring that only clean, filtered water reaches the crops, thereby maintaining the integrity of the irrigation system.
