Arrhopalites

Arrhopalites is a genus of springtails (order Collembola) belonging to the family Arrhopalitidae. These tiny, soil-dwelling arthropods are commonly found in moist environments rich in organic matter. While often considered decomposers, certain conditions can cause them to act as opportunistic pests, specifically targeting young seedlings and greenhouse crops.

These pests affect a variety of horticultural and greenhouse crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and ornamental flowers. They are particularly destructive to young, tender plants that have recently germinated or been transplanted. Mushroom cultivation is also susceptible to damage from large populations of these insects.

The biology of Arrhopalites is intrinsically linked to moisture levels. They thrive in damp, dark environments and feed primarily on organic detritus, fungal hyphae, and decaying plant material. Under favorable conditions—typically high humidity and moderate temperatures—their life cycle is rapid, allowing populations to explode within a short period.

The damage caused by Arrhopalites typically manifests as the consumption of root hairs and tender root tips. They may also graze on the lower parts of the stem or the hypocotyl of seedlings, causing wilting, stunting, or total collapse. By creating entry points on the roots, they inadvertently facilitate the spread of soil-borne fungal pathogens, increasing overall crop stress.
