Arthroplea belongs to the order Ephemeroptera, family Arthropleidae. It is important to note that in an agronomic context, the larvae of these mayflies typically inhabit water bodies and feed on detritus or periphyton. However, their presence in flooded rice paddies or near irrigation systems can lead to the clogging of hydraulic structures.
The biology of Arthroplea is characterized by a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The larvae develop in fresh water bodies with slow currents, where they actively filter organic particles. The life cycle includes a prolonged nymph stage, which can last for several months, and a short adult stage that is unable to feed.
The economic impact of Arthroplea in the classical sense for field crops is minimal; however, for rice production, these insects pose an indirect threat. Large accumulations of larvae in irrigation canals can disrupt the throughput of water supply systems, which is critical during the active growing season of rice.
The nature of the damage is expressed in the clogging of pump station filters and irrigation pipes with insect biomass. This leads to interruptions in water delivery to the fields, causing plant stress and reducing overall yield due to the disruption of the soil water balance.
Protection measures include regular cleaning of irrigation canals to remove excessive aquatic vegetation where larvae develop. Additionally, effective methods include monitoring water quality and using filtration screens with a mesh size that prevents large larvae from entering the water delivery system.
