Description

Systematic position. Aschistonyx is a genus of insects belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). These tiny insects are known for their ability to induce the formation of galls or specific deformities within plant tissues where their larvae develop.

Host plants. The most notable species, Aschistonyx eppoi, primarily affects ornamental shrubs, particularly those in the genus Caryopteris (Bluebeard). The pest is highly host-specific, which poses a significant threat to nurseries and specialized botanical collections where these plants are cultivated.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is intricately linked to the host plant's phenology. Adults deposit eggs in developing buds or young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the plant tissue to feed on cell contents. Depending on environmental conditions, several generations can occur during a growing season, with overwintering typically taking place at the larval stage within the gall or in the soil.

Nature of damage and harm. The feeding activity of the larvae disrupts normal bud development, often resulting in inhibited bud break or the production of stunted, distorted shoots.
