Description
The Aschistonyx carpinicolus is a member of the Diptera order and the Cecidomyiidae family. This species is a highly specialized herbivore, known primarily for its ability to induce the formation of galls on the foliage of its specific host plants, impacting the tree's overall vitality.
The primary host plant for this pest is the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). By targeting the developing leaves, the insect ensures a reliable supply of nutrients for its larvae, which inhabit the specialized tissues created by the host tree in response to the midge's chemical secretions.
The biological cycle is synchronized with the bud burst and leaf development of the host tree. Adult females deposit eggs on the surface of young leaves. Once the larvae emerge, they settle into the leaf tissue, triggering the development of galls where they mature, protected from external predators and environmental changes.
The damage caused by these insects is characterized by the presence of numerous small galls on the leaf surface. While a few galls may not harm the tree, heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop and physiological stress, which significantly impacts the aesthetic quality and growth rate of the hornbeam.
Management of the hornbeam gall midge focuses on sanitary practices. Implementing strict leaf litter removal during the autumn and winter months is the most effective method, as it disrupts the overwintering pupae cycle. In nurseries, if outbreaks are severe, horticultural oils or systemic insecticides may be used during the peak flight of the adult midges.
