Description
Ascogaster is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Braconidae, within the order Hymenoptera. In agricultural science, these insects are classified as beneficial entomophages rather than pests, as they act as natural parasitoids that target various agricultural insect pests.
They are primarily known for parasitizing the larvae of Tortricidae moths, most notably the codling moth (Cydia pomonella). By targeting the eggs and larvae of these pests, they provide essential ecosystem services in orchard environments, reducing the need for chemical interventions.
The biology of Ascogaster follows an endoparasitic life cycle. The female wasp deposits its egg inside the host's egg. The parasitoid larva then consumes the host from within, completing its development as the host larvae reaches maturity or pupation, ultimately preventing the pest from reproducing.
Since they do not cause direct damage to plant tissues, they are not considered a threat to crops. Their economic value lies in their ability to serve as a natural biological control agent, significantly lowering the population density of harmful lepidopterans throughout the growing season.
To promote the presence of these beneficial insects, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential. Growers should minimize the use of broad-spectrum synthetic insecticides, which can harm wasp populations. Instead, opt for selective pesticides and cultural practices that favor the survival and reproduction of natural predators.
