Description
Systematic position. Asymmetrasca decedens is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly impacting warm-climate crops and sensitive horticultural systems.
Host crops. This species has a wide range of host plants. It primarily infests cotton plants, but also causes considerable damage to vegetable crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, and potatoes. Leguminous crops are also frequent targets, and weed reservoirs play a critical role in the insect's survival throughout the year.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing plant tissues and sucking out sap. The rate of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature, allowing the pest to complete multiple generations quickly during the growing season, which often leads to rapid population explosions.
Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is caused by the insect's piercing-sucking mouthparts and the injection of saliva, which contains enzymes that disrupt plant metabolism. Typical symptoms include:

Key strategies include regular monitoring of crop fields, maintaining field sanitation to remove alternate weed hosts, and the judicious use of systemic insecticides. Selective chemistry is preferred to protect beneficial insects while effectively targeting the nymphal stages on the underside of leaves.
