Description

Systematic position. The Japanese leafhopper (Asymmetrasca nipponica) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. This species is a serious phytophage capable of causing significant damage to both commercial orchards and ornamental plants.

Host plants. The pest exhibits polyphagy, feeding on a wide range of plants. It causes the most damage to fruit crops, including apple and pear trees, as well as various berries and vegetable crops. In recent years, its spread in nurseries has been observed, where it affects young seedlings and ornamental shrubs.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Asymmetrasca nipponica includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Typically, they overwinter as eggs laid in the bark tissues of young shoots. In spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages, actively feeding on plant sap. The pest can produce multiple generations per season, which makes population control significantly more difficult.

  • Stunted growth of shoots and fruit deformation;
  • Reduced overall plant vigor and productivity.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach. This includes regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps. When the economic threshold is reached, systemic insecticides are applied. Important agrotechnical practices include the timely pruning and destruction of infested shoots, as well as the removal of weeds in inter-rows, which serve as reservoirs for the leafhopper population.
