In an agricultural context, it is not a plant-feeding pest in the traditional sense, as it does not consume crops. However, it is categorized as a "pest" by agricultural engineers due to its negative impact on irrigation infrastructure and water management systems.
The biology of Atherina revolves around its adaptation to various salinity levels and its schooling behavior. These fish spawn in coastal and brackish waters, forming dense groups that can move into irrigation canals. Their lifecycle includes phases of intense population growth, which coincides with the primary irrigation seasons for many agricultural crops.
The damage caused by this species is purely mechanical and systemic. When Atherina schools enter water intake pipes, they can block filtration screens, clog drip irrigation emitters, and put excessive strain on pumps. This results in irrigation failure, leading to drought stress for crops, reduced yields, and costly equipment repairs.
