Description
The glasshouse potato aphid (genus Aulacorthum), notably Aulacorthum solani, belongs to the family Aphididae. This insect is a significant pest known for its ability to colonize a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants. Its physiological traits allow it to thrive in diverse environments, making it a persistent challenge for commercial and amateur growers.
This pest affects a broad range of host plants, including solanaceous crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers, as well as many ornamental species. They primarily colonize the undersides of leaves and young, tender stems. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts, they extract vital plant sap, which leads to the weakening of the host organism.
The life cycle of the aphid is highly accelerated in controlled environments like greenhouses. They reproduce parthenogenetically, meaning females produce live young without mating. This mode of reproduction leads to exponential population growth, often resulting in heavy infestations that can overwhelm a plant in a matter of days.

This sticky substance becomes a substrate for sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis.
