Aurelia

Aurelia (lat. Aurelia) is a genus of insect pests belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. In agronomic practice, these insects are identified as significant foliar feeders capable of causing substantial damage to various agricultural crops, necessitating strict monitoring and proactive management strategies.

This pest primarily targets a diverse range of crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. The larvae are characterized by intense feeding habits, causing extensive tissue loss on leaves, stems, and reproductive organs, which significantly impedes the development of the host plant and reduces overall yield quality.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult (imago). Depending on environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity, the pest can complete one or multiple generations within a single growing season. The pupal stage typically overwinters in the soil or crop debris, providing a mechanism for survival during cold conditions.

The damage caused by Aurelia is often characterized by skeletonized leaves, irregular edge feeding, and damage to buds and young fruits. During outbreaks, the larvae can cause total defoliation of the canopy, severely disrupting photosynthetic activity and plant vigor, ultimately leading to significant economic losses for farmers.
