The Lucerne leafhopper (Austroasca alfalfae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a specialized insect pest known for causing significant damage to alfalfa fields worldwide, often resulting in severe losses of forage quality and yield.

The primary host for this insect is alfalfa (Medicago sativa). These leafhoppers feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking the phloem sap. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients and disrupts the normal physiological processes, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor of the crop.
