Description
Systematic position: The Alfalfa looper (Autographa californica) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest primarily found in North America, notorious for its ability to infest a vast variety of horticultural and field crops.
Host plants: This insect is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Preferred crops include alfalfa, lettuce, sugar beets, potatoes, onions, cabbage, peas, and various other vegetable crops. Its ability to switch between different hosts makes it a persistent challenge for farmers.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae, which exhibit the characteristic "looping" motion, go through several instars. The pupal stage occurs inside a loose silk cocoon, often attached to the leaves of the host plant or within debris on the soil surface.

Early instars create small holes in the leaves (skeletonization), while later instars consume large portions of the leaf tissue.
