The genus Aythya, commonly known as pochards, belongs to the family Anatidae within the order Anseriformes. While these are wild migratory birds, in an agronomic context, they are categorized as vertebrate pests that can cause significant damage to specific agricultural systems, particularly in rice cultivation regions.
The primary damage caused by Aythya species occurs in flooded rice fields during the germination and early seedling stages. As diving ducks, they forage by diving into the water and searching the substrate for food, which leads to the accidental or intentional consumption of sprouted seeds and the uprooting of young rice plants.
The biology of pochards involves a specialized feeding strategy based on aquatic foraging. Their ability to dive deep into rice paddies allows them to access seeds that are not available to surface-feeding waterfowl. The migratory patterns of these birds mean that their presence in agricultural zones is seasonal, coinciding with the periods when crops are most vulnerable.
