Tufted duck

The tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), belonging to the order Anseriformes and family Anatidae, is recognized as a pest in commercial aquaculture and fish farming. While it is a wild species, its feeding behavior causes significant economic damage to hatchery operations and stocked pond systems.

The primary crops and resources damaged by the tufted duck include commercial fish stocks, particularly fry and fingerlings in intensive aquaculture facilities. Beyond direct predation on fish, these birds can cause indirect damage to surrounding vegetation and field crops near the water's edge through trampling and disturbance of the shoreline habitat.

The biology of the species is centered around its diving capabilities and migratory patterns. As a diving duck, it exploits food resources in deeper water columns that other avian pests cannot reach. The biological cycle includes peak activity during migration periods, where large flocks congregate in fish-rich waters, maximizing their caloric intake before completing their seasonal travel.

The nature of the damage is characterized by the consumption of high-value juvenile fish. Because of their efficient diving, these ducks can severely deplete stock densities in a very short time. Furthermore, the presence of these birds increases the risk of spreading aquatic parasites and pathogens between different production ponds, leading to potential outbreaks of fish diseases.

Effective control measures involve physical barriers and deterrence strategies. The most reliable method is the use of overhead netting in high-density ponds, which prevents diving birds from accessing the water surface. Additionally, non-lethal acoustic deterrents and visual predator models are widely used to discourage the ducks from establishing presence in sensitive aquaculture areas.
