Description
The genus Baccha belongs to the Syrphidae family within the Diptera order. While many syrphid flies are recognized as beneficial predators of aphids, the larvae of some Baccha species display phytophagous tendencies, causing significant stress to cultivated plants when their natural prey becomes unavailable or when populations surge.
The biological cycle of these insects consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females prefer to oviposit near food sources, such as aphid colonies. However, the larvae are adaptable; they utilize specialized mouthparts to pierce plant tissue, which allows them to extract nutrients directly from the stems or leaves of the host plant, resulting in mechanical and chemical damage.
A variety of crops, including vegetables and ornamentals, are susceptible to Baccha infestation. The primary damage occurs during the larval stage, characterized by tissue mining and leaf distortion. These injuries often serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi or bacteria, which can exacerbate the overall impact on the plant's health.

In commercial greenhouses, a high infestation density can lead to total loss of marketability, particularly for ornamental flowering plants and sensitive vegetable cultivars.
