Description
The genus Bactrocera belongs to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. These are among the most destructive agricultural pests worldwide. Due to their high reproductive rate and ability to adapt to various climates, numerous species within this genus are classified as serious quarantine pests.
The range of affected crops is extensive, covering both horticultural and vegetable production. Common hosts include mangoes, citrus fruits, peaches, pears, tomatoes, peppers, and various types of cucurbits. The economic loss caused by these flies can be devastating to local and international trade.
The biology of Bactrocera involves the female using her ovipositor to pierce the fruit skin and deposit eggs inside the flesh. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the fruit interior, causing rapid decay. The pupation phase usually occurs in the soil, allowing the insect to complete its cycle effectively.
Damage is typically characterized by small puncture marks on the skin, followed by internal tissue collapse and secondary infections caused by fungi or bacteria. The presence of larvae inside the fruit makes the produce completely unsaleable and unfit for human consumption.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM):
- Deploying male annihilation technique (MAT) using pheromone traps.
- Applying protein bait sprays to kill adults before egg-laying.
- Rigorous sanitation practices, including the destruction of fallen and infested fruits.
- Enforcing quarantine regulations to prevent the spread of the insect to new territories.
