Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. Members of this family, particularly those within the genus Bactrocera, are widely recognized as significant economic pests, causing substantial damage to various horticultural and fruit crops across global tropical and subtropical regions.

Host crops. The pest is known to infest a wide variety of fruit-bearing plants. Its host range typically includes diverse tropical fruits, vegetable crops, and some botanical species susceptible to oviposition. The insect's adaptability makes it a persistent threat to commercial orchards and local production sites where environmental conditions are suitable for its life cycle.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly inserts eggs into the fruit tissue using its ovipositor. Larvae hatch and begin feeding on the fruit's interior flesh. Once larval development is complete, they exit the fruit to pupate, usually burying themselves in the soil or protected surface debris.

Damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage is inflicted by the larvae, which tunnel into the fruit, causing tissue breakdown. This results in premature fruit drop, softening of the pulp, and secondary bacterial or fungal infections. Infested fruits are rendered unmarketable and unsuitable for human consumption, often leading to severe yield losses.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Essential strategies include the use of pheromone-based monitoring traps to detect early infestations and the application of protein baits or targeted insecticides. Cultural practices such as the immediate removal and destruction of fallen fruit are crucial to interrupt the life cycle and prevent future generations of the pest.
