Description

The carambola fruit fly (Bactrocera carambolae) is a member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. Recognized as a highly destructive agricultural pest, it poses a major quarantine threat to tropical and subtropical fruit production globally, significantly impacting international trade.

This species is highly polyphagous, infesting a wide range of fruit crops including carambola, mango, citrus, guava, and wax apple. The ability of the fly to adapt to various hosts makes it particularly difficult to manage in regions with high fruit diversity and year-round production cycles.

The biological cycle of the fly comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females pierce the skin of ripening fruits with their ovipositor to lay eggs. Under favorable tropical temperatures, the development from egg to adult is rapid, allowing for multiple generations per year and exponential population growth.

Damage is primarily caused by larvae feeding within the fruit flesh, which causes internal breakdown and premature fruit drop. Affected fruits become soft and develop secondary bacterial or fungal infections, making them entirely unmarketable and leading to severe yield losses for growers.
