Fruit fly Bactrocera caryeae

Bactrocera caryeae belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is considered a significant agricultural pest that poses a serious threat to fruit production in its native and invaded regions. Like other members of the Bactrocera genus, this species demonstrates high biological plasticity and a remarkable ability to multiply quickly under favorable environmental conditions.

This pest affects a wide range of fruit-bearing crops. The primary hosts include various woody plants that produce fleshy fruits. Both wild species and commercial orchards are at risk, which categorizes this insect as a priority concern for international and regional plant quarantine authorities due to its potential to cause major economic losses.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs by piercing the skin of ripening or mature fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae feed extensively within the fruit pulp, creating galleries that cause the tissue to soften and lead to premature fruit drop. Once the larval development is complete, the larvae emerge from the fruit to pupate in the soil.

The economic impact stems from the total loss of fruit marketability and widespread decay. Larval feeding often facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which rapidly liquefy the fruit tissue. High infestation levels can lead to the destruction of a significant portion of the harvest if adequate control measures are not implemented in time.
