Description
The Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) is a major pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. Due to its high reproductive potential and ability to thrive on a vast array of fruit and vegetable hosts, it is classified as one of the most destructive agricultural pests worldwide.
It infests over 400 host species, including commercially vital crops such as citrus, mango, avocado, stone fruits, and various solanaceous crops like tomatoes. The global spread of this fly presents a significant threat to international trade, often resulting in strict quarantine regulations and bans on imported produce from infested areas.
The life cycle typically involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female pierces the skin of ripe or ripening fruit to deposit clusters of eggs. Depending on environmental factors, particularly temperature, the life cycle can be completed in as little as three weeks, allowing multiple generations per year.
Damage is caused primarily by the feeding larvae, which tunnel through the pulp of the fruit, causing tissue breakdown and secondary rot. Affected fruits often drop prematurely or become completely hollowed out by the larval infestation, rendering them unfit for consumption or sale, leading to total yield loss in uncontrolled conditions.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to suppression and exclusion. Key strategies include: deploying male-annihilation techniques using traps with pheromone lures; the application of toxic bait stations combining protein hydrolysates and insecticides; sanitation practices such as the prompt destruction of infested fruit; and systematic field monitoring to detect new populations before they reach economic injury levels.
