Description
Systematic position: The Tongan fruit fly (Bactrocera facialis) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its destructive potential toward a wide range of horticultural crops within its Pacific island distribution range.
Host plants: This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it infests a large variety of host plants. Primary hosts include pepper (Capsicum spp.), tomatoes, mango, papaya, guava, and various citrus fruits. The wide host range makes it a persistent threat to both commercial orchards and small-scale gardens.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (three instars), pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs under the skin of ripening fruits using a specialized ovipositor. The emerging larvae feed internally on the pulp, causing rapid deterioration. After completing their development, larvae exit the fruit and drop to the soil to pupate.
Nature of damage and pest status: The damage caused by Bactrocera facialis is primarily internal. Larval feeding destroys the fruit structure and creates pathways for secondary bacterial and fungal infections. This renders the fruit completely inedible and often causes premature fruit drop, leading to severe quantitative and qualitative losses for growers.
Control measures: Management of the Tongan fruit fly relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to minimize infestation levels:
