Description

Bactrocera kandiensis is a destructive insect species belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. Recognized as a significant horticultural pest, it represents a threat to fruit production in tropical and subtropical environments, causing severe agricultural losses through direct damage to ripening fruits.

The host range of this pest includes various fruit-bearing trees. Major economically important crops affected by the Kandyan fruit fly include mango, guava, citrus varieties, and papaya. These crops are highly susceptible due to their nutrient-rich pulp, which provides an ideal environment for larval development.

The life cycle of the pest involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositor to insert eggs into the host fruit tissue. After hatching, the larvae tunnel through the pulp, causing internal tissue degradation. The pupal stage typically takes place in the soil beneath the host plant, allowing the insect to emerge as an adult for the next cycle.

Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by internal rotting and premature fruit drop. As the larvae feed, they create exit holes, which make the fruit vulnerable to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria. This renders the produce entirely unmarketable and leads to substantial yield reductions, making it a target for strict phytosanitary regulations.
