Description
Systematic position. The Kirki fruit fly is classified under the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its aggressive reproductive habits and capacity to cause widespread damage in fruit-producing regions.
Host crops. This species is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide variety of fruit crops. Its primary hosts include citrus, mango, papaya, guava, and various other tropical fruits. The pest can infest both commercial orchard environments and domestic backyards, making control efforts particularly challenging.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the tissues of maturing fruits. Once hatched, larvae feed voraciously within the fruit flesh. After completing development, larvae emerge from the fruit and pupate in the soil beneath the host plant, completing the cycle.
Damage and pest status. The presence of larvae leads to rapid tissue decay and internal rot of the fruit. Infected fruits often exhibit discoloration, soft spots, and premature abscission. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the fruit until they are ready to pupate, the damage is often discovered only when the fruit is harvested or opened, leading to severe economic losses.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this fly. Key strategies include:
- Deploying pheromone-baited traps for monitoring and mass trapping.
- Strict sanitation protocols, including the collection and deep burial of fallen fruits.
- Application of bait sprays containing protein hydrolysates and insecticides.
- Implementation of strict quarantine regulations to prevent the spread to non-infested areas.
