Description
Bactrocera lineata belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. These flies are widely recognized as significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to their ability to damage various fruits, they are often subject to strict quarantine regulations in many countries to prevent international spread.
The host range of this species is quite diverse, primarily affecting a variety of fruit-bearing trees. It is known to infest commercial crops, leading to heavy losses if left unmanaged. Farmers in endemic areas must remain vigilant, as the larvae can destroy the fruit from the inside out, making detection difficult until the damage is severe.
The life cycle of the fruit fly follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the skin of suitable fruit. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the pulp, creating galleries that cause the tissue to collapse. After reaching maturity, larvae exit the fruit and drop to the soil to pupate.
The impact of this pest is characterized by fruit dropping, surface scarring, and premature decay. The destruction caused by larval feeding often allows secondary bacterial or fungal infections to set in, which rapidly liquifies the fruit's interior. This renders the crop completely unsuitable for either market sale or human consumption.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This includes the use of male annihilation techniques (MAT) with pheromone-baited traps to reduce adult populations, orchard sanitation to remove infested fruit, and the targeted application of insecticides. Biological control and maintaining strict phytosanitary barriers are also essential components of a robust management strategy.
