Description
The spotted fruit fly (Bactrocera maculigera) is a destructive member of the family Tephritidae within the order Diptera. Recognized as a significant threat to agriculture, this species is strictly monitored in many countries to prevent its spread, as it thrives in tropical and subtropical environments, causing severe damage to fruit production.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, predominantly those with succulent fruits. Major crops susceptible to infestation include tomatoes, peppers, citrus fruits, and various orchard crops. The larvae feed internally, rendering the produce completely unmarketable and leading to total yield losses if left uncontrolled.
The life cycle begins when a female deposits eggs beneath the skin of a fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the pulp, consuming the tissue and weakening the fruit's structural integrity. After completing their larval development, they exit the host and pupate in the soil, emerging later as adults to restart the cycle.
The primary symptom of infestation is the appearance of small puncture marks on the fruit surface, often followed by localized softening and discoloration. As the larvae feed, they facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, which accelerate the decomposition of the fruit. This makes the crop unsuitable for both fresh consumption and processing.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control (IPM). Key strategies include the deployment of surveillance traps, strict quarantine protocols to prevent the movement of infested fruit, and the regular destruction of fallen or damaged produce. In cases of high population density, targeted applications of insecticides or bio-control agents may be necessary to suppress the infestation levels.
