Description

Bactrocera melanotus belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in the Pacific region, where it poses a constant threat to local and export fruit production.

The host range of this fly is exceptionally broad, including economically important crops such as mangoes, papayas, citrus fruits, avocados, and various tropical guavas. Because of its adaptability, it represents a high risk for regions with similar climatic conditions.

The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly uses her ovipositor to pierce the skin of ripening fruits to deposit eggs. Larval development occurs within the fruit, where they feed on the pulp, causing rapid tissue breakdown.

Damage is characterized by internal rotting and the presence of larvae tunnels within the fruit. Infested fruits typically show premature ripening and subsequent dropping. Secondary infections from fungi and bacteria are common in tissues damaged by larval feeding.

Control measures are primarily focused on quarantine regulations to prevent the spread of the pest. Integrated pest management (IPM) programs include the use of male-attractant traps, protein bait sprays to target adults, and systematic sanitation through the destruction of fallen, infested fruit to interrupt the life cycle.
