Taxonomic position: The Chinese citrus fly (Bactrocera minax) is a member of the Diptera order and the Tephritidae family. It is recognized as a significant quarantine pest of global concern, native to East Asian countries, where it causes devastating losses to commercial citrus production if left unmanaged.

Host plants: The primary hosts for Bactrocera minax are various species of the genus Citrus. Oranges, mandarins, lemons, and pomelos are particularly susceptible to infestation. Because of its narrow host range and specific requirements, it is considered a major barrier to the international trade of fresh citrus fruits.

Biology and life cycle: This species typically completes one generation per year (univoltine). Adult flies emerge during the spring and early summer. After mating, the females deposit eggs beneath the skin of developing citrus fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the fruit interior until they reach maturity, drop to the soil, and pupate, remaining in the soil throughout the winter months.

Damage and economic impact: The damage caused by the larvae is severe. They create tunnels through the fruit, leading to internal decay and fruit drop before harvest. Even if the fruit remains on the tree, the infestation makes it completely unsellable and unsuitable for processing, resulting in significant yield reduction and economic losses for growers.

Control measures: Management of the Chinese citrus fly relies heavily on preventing its spread through strict quarantine regulations. Field management practices include the prompt collection and destruction of fallen, infested fruits to disrupt the pupation process in the soil. For active management, growers use protein-based bait sprays or targeted insecticide applications timed with adult fly emergence, alongside pheromone traps for early detection.
