Description

The Lesser Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera neohumeralis) is a significant pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is native to the coastal regions of eastern Australia and is distinguished from its close relative, the Queensland fruit fly, by its specific humeral calli markings.

This species is highly polyphagous, infesting a vast array of fruit and vegetable hosts. Major crops susceptible to attack include mangoes, avocados, papayas, citrus, guavas, and tomatoes. Its ability to infest a wide variety of plants makes it a complex pest for farmers to manage in both commercial orchards and home gardens.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly uses her ovipositor to deposit eggs under the skin of ripening fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the flesh, feeding on the tissue. Under favorable temperature conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in about three to four weeks.

The damage caused by Bactrocera neohumeralis is devastating. Infested fruits typically show signs of decay, rot, and premature drop. Larval feeding galleries facilitate secondary infections by bacteria and fungi, turning the fruit into a mushy mass that is completely unsalable and unsuitable for human consumption.

Control strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. Essential practices include the use of male-attractant traps for population monitoring, strict orchard sanitation by collecting and disposing of fallen fruit, and the targeted application of protein bait sprays combined with insecticides. Maintaining biological diversity in the orchard also helps in managing population spikes through natural predation.
