Bactrocera obliqua is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the family Tephritidae (order Diptera). This pest has a diverse host range, primarily focusing on crops within the Cucurbitaceae family. Common hosts include cucumber, melon, pumpkin, and bitter gourd. Additionally, it has been recorded infesting various species of tropical fruits. Its ability to infest a wide variety of commercial crops makes it a persistent threat to agricultural stability in the regions it inhabits.

The biology of Bactrocera obliqua follows the typical life cycle of fruit flies, comprising the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs beneath the epidermis of the host fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the internal pulp, creating internal tunnels and gallery systems that disrupt the physiological integrity of the fruit.

Damage caused by this insect is significant and visually apparent. Infested fruits often show signs of oviposition punctures followed by rapid softening, discoloration, and eventual collapse of the fruit tissue.
