The Bactrocera occipitalis, commonly known as the Philippine fruit fly, is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized as a significant quarantine pest that poses a severe threat to the agricultural sectors, particularly in Southeast Asian countries where it impacts both domestic consumption and international fruit trade.
This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It primarily targets various tropical and subtropical fruits, including mangoes, guavas, papayas, and citrus varieties. It also successfully colonizes several vegetable crops, such as chili peppers and tomatoes, making it a versatile and persistent pest in diverse agroecosystems.
The biological cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly beneath the skin of ripening or ripe fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin consuming the pulp, creating galleries inside the fruit. Once the larvae complete their development, they typically drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.
The economic damage is caused by the larval feeding, which leads to fruit rot and premature fruit drop. A single fruit can be infested by multiple larvae, turning the inside into a liquified mass. Even a low infestation level can cause high rejection rates during harvest, as the entry points of the ovipositor serve as pathways for secondary infections by fungi and bacteria.
